Coding Superstars: The ‘Calm Down’ Garden

Turn your device into a smart listening machine using Scratch! Instead of using a keyboard or touchscreen, you’ll code a hidden garden that listens to the room around you. If you can stay super quiet or hum a gentle tune, magical flowers, leaves and colours will pop up and grow across your screen. But watch out - if you clap, laugh or shout, your garden will disappear in a flash!

What you’ll need

To create your own ‘Calm down’ garden, you will need to access the FREE to use website Scratch – an online coding tool which is available to use on any phone, tablet or computer. 

Show us your work

Once you have created your own ‘Calm down’ garden in Scratch, you can send it to the Family Fund team using an app called Showbie. Showbie is a tool that allows you to join a virtual classroom and show off your amazing creations.

Ask a grown up to help you set up a Showbie account and join our virtual class using code: EEZYC4.

Additional challenge

Now that you have an understanding of how to create a game in Scratch, show us your best efforts and create a different type of scene that is controlled by sounds!

Send in your best creations through Showbie and we’ll take a look at how amazing they are and send you some lovely feedback. You may even see some of our favourites on the Family Fund social media channels!
