From 1 April, the way we work with families in Wales has changed. This follows the award of a new three-year funding agreement from Welsh Government.

Families need to be aware of the following key changes to our grants criteria:

  • Families in Wales are not able to apply for a grant if they have received a grant from Family Fund in the last three years. However, we will still consider urgent grants for families requiring support with hospital visiting costs and similar needs, or where a family is in crisis
  • Families will still be able to download or order application forms from the website/over the phone, but they will no longer be able to apply for a grant online.

If you think you might be eligible for a grant, and to find out more about how to apply, visit our grants pages for Welsh families.

Families who have already been awarded a grant but have not yet redeemed it will not be affected by these changes.

If you have recently submitted an application for a grant, but are currently awaiting a decision, please contact us.

Why is this change taking place?

In February, it was confirmed that Family Fund had been successful in our bid to the Welsh Government’s new Sustainable Social Services Third Sector Grants Scheme, securing one of the largest grant awards available. We have been awarded £1.5 million over three years from 2016/17 to support our grant and information programme in Wales.

This new agreement does represent a reduction in overall funding from the £2.5 million that Family Fund received in 2015/16, and has each year for over 10 years. In recognising the valuable support provided by Family Fund, and to help support more families in the first year of changes to the scheme, the Welsh Government has also offered a further £400,000 for 2016/17, representing total funding of £1.9 million over the three years.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Welsh Government has asked that we prioritise families who have not previously received support from Family Fund. We will still consider urgent grants for families requiring support with hospital visiting costs and similar needs, or where a family is in crisis.

We have compiled a list of other support services and grants available to families in Wales, which may be of help.
