August 2023 saw a month of fun for the whole family with our Discover Digital summer festival creative iPad workshops!

We had an all-new line-up of free, exciting virtual workshops run by our friendly team of Apple Professional Learning Specialists. Children and young people gained new creative iPad skills to take forward and use again and again. From creative coding to making some noise in our music sessions, there was something for everyone.

Young people were able to meet friends and found out how to do amazing things with their iPad. The workshops were designed for children and young people with additional needs and their siblings.

The festival ran for three weeks with the option of mix and matching workshops to suit children’s interests. The sessions were free to attend and all used apps that are free to download onto your iPad from the Apple app store.

At the end of the festival, we threw open the doors of the showcase tent, where everyone was invited to show their work to their fellow festival-goers in a friendly, supportive finale.

What did we do?

Our Apple expert trainers had some great new iPad workshops. Each of our them headlined their virtual festival tent with their own special sessions.

Our friends at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) made guest appearances at some of our workshops to support children with visual impairments.

In the virtual Film tent:

Documentary dynamos used the free app iMovie to make amazing documentaries! They combined photos, videos, voiceovers and music to spread the word about their chosen topics.

Awesome advertisers found out how to make a TV ad using photos, videos and voiceovers. They had great fun spreading the word about their amazing inventions and favourite things.

In the virtual Tech tent:

App inventors designed, built and tested their very own app prototype. They collected pictures or wrote information about their favourite topics and put it together using the free Keynote app.

Creative coders jump started their tech skills by looking at some of the creative coding tools available on an iPad and used them to create simple games with the free apps Swift Playgrounds and Hopscotch.

In the virtual Sounds tent:

DJ superstars explored music making. No matter whether they were into pop or punk, rock or reggae, they created a song on the app Garageband using built-in loops and adding effects and filters.

Podcast pioneers set out on a fun, fact-finding mission to create and edit a podcast or radio show using Garageband. They even made an introductory jingle. Then they exported their finished production to share it with friends and family.

In the virtual Art tent:

Art explorers used the free Sketches app to paint their own portrait based around a selfie, in the style of famous artists like Andy Warhol and Picasso!
