Take A Break Scotland grant opens for 2026 applications

From midday today, parent carers of disabled or seriously ill children and young people aged 0-17 in Scotland can apply for a flexible grant to use for a break away, towards leisure activities or outings, sports equipment and much more.

The aim of the scheme, funded by the Scottish Government, is to improve unpaid carers’ quality of life, health and wellbeing by providing cash grants to help them access a short break from the day-to-day routine of caring. Carers can use Take a Break grants flexibly to help meet their interests and circumstances.

Take A Break Scotland opened to 2026 applications at midday on Tuesday 5 May and closes on Monday 22 June 2026, and to be eligible parent carers applying must: 

·       have lived in Scotland continuously for six months or longer 

·       be UK residents 

·       be caring for a disabled or seriously ill child or young person aged 0 to 17 years who lives at home with them 

·       be caring for a disabled child or young person who is not looked after by the local authority
