From first steps to the finish line – celebrating our York 10K runners 

Together, the Mini Event and York 10K raised more than £5,000 for Family Fund, providing vital grants and services to families. A huge thank you to Wilkin Chapman Rollits, whose sponsorship helped make the event possible. 

For Sarah and Chris, race day wasn’t just about running 10K. It was about pushing themselves outside their comfort zones, supporting a cause they care deeply about, and showing that anyone can take on a fundraising event. 

Every journey starts with a first step 

For Sarah and Chris the decision to run was an easy one. 

Sarah never saw herself as a runner, taking on Couch to 5K before gradually building up her distance with Park runs.

“As a non-runner, I wanted to set myself a new goal. Working for Family Fund, I see every day the need for more support for families and wanted to do something to help.” 

Chris steadily increased his training throughout the summer, improving both his fitness and race preparation before achieving a personal best on race day. 

Crossing the finish line 

Both runners described the York 10K as an unforgettable experience. From the crowds cheering around York Racecourse to the Minster bells ringing through the city, race day delivered plenty of memorable moments. 

For Sarah, simply finishing was a huge achievement. 

Chris also left with plenty to celebrate after setting a new personal best. 

“Picking up the finisher’s medal is always a real buzz. You can’t help but feel proud.” 

Soundtrack to Success 

Music helped keep both runners motivated throughout their training and on race day. Sarah created a playlist filled with song requests from everyone who sponsored her. 

“It made me think about each person cheering me on. My favourite was Go by The Chemical Brothers, but Gonna Fly Now from Rocky was exactly what I needed for the final stretch.”  

Chris also has his running favourites. 

“I always start with Runnin’ (Lose It All) by Naughty Boy and Beyoncé. If I need an extra boost, Gonna Fly Now always does the trick.”

If Sarah’s story proves anything, it’s that you don’t have to be a runner to get involved. And Chris shows that whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply crossing the finish line, every pound raised can have a lasting impact on families’ lives. 

Their advice is simple: 

“Give it a go. A lot of people get put off by things like performance and completion time, but those don’t really matter – it’s the community and the spirit that matter.” 

Chris also recommends taking on a challenge with other people.

“Grab a couple of friends and enter together. Set yourselves a training day each week, then reward yourselves afterwards with a coffee or takeaway. Before long, you’ll find yourself looking forward to it.”
