Celebrating an incredible 35-year career: Elaine’s Family Fund journey 

Family Fund’s work depends on people who bring consistency, kindness and skill to every role. Their experience strengthens our support for families raising a disabled or seriously ill child. 

This month, we are celebrating the long service of Elaine, who has spent 35 years contributing to our mission. Her career reflects the value of curiosity, flexibility and purpose in a changing organisation. 

Starting out and growing with Family Fund 

In 1991, Elaine joined Family Fund for a three-week temp role. She planned to work a few afternoons each week as a part-time typist. Her daughter was nine months old, and the role suited her family life. That short placement became a remarkable career. 

Elaine moved through many roles as the organisation developed. She worked in grant processing, supported decision making, and became Secretary to the Director of Family Services. She later worked as Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive.  

She also joined the communications team, delivered events, and supported family workshops. During COVID, she adapted to help run online webinars for families. 

Supporting families 

Some of Elaine’s strongest memories come from events with families. She recalls a specific event at Butlins, where a young autistic boy wanted to ride the chair-o-planes, but his dad had vertigo. Elaine rode with him despite her own fear of heights. She remembers his expression: “The joy on that little boy’s face… I’ll never forget it.”  

Representing Family Fund  

Elaine also represented Family Fund at national events, from party conferences to parliamentary meetings. These experiences built her confidence and broadened her skills. They also showed her how widely recognised Family Fund’s work had become. 

Colleagues and support 

35 years is a lifetime. During her career, Elaine has navigated the ups and downs that many of us face – balancing work with caring for family members and managing her own health. She values the support she received during key life moments, and highlights the flexibility offered by colleagues and managers. She describes Family Fund as a place where people look out for one another. 

“Everyone is supportive, and having a no-blame culture – that comes from the top.” 

Elaine’s advice 

Elaine shared her advice for building a long, successful career:  

“Read everything and get involved in everything. There’s so much to get involved with at Family Fund.” 

And she’s not wrong. Family Fund offers plenty of ways for colleagues to get involved, contribute ideas and help shape our culture.  

Looking back 

Elaine leaves behind a great legacy. She has helped shape events, supported families, and adapted through decades of change. Her contribution spans many roles and many milestones. She describes her time simply: “I will always look back on it fondly.”
