BBC Radio 4 charity appeal

TV and radio presenter, Ken Bruce, presented our appeal on BBC Radio 4 in early February 2025, raising funds for Your Opportunity, our grant programme dedicated to enhancing the lives of disabled and seriously ill young adults.

Donations still support families

Our appeal on BBC Radio 4 has ended, but you can still make a difference to families raising disabled and seriously ill children and young adults. How your donations can help:

£10 pays for a book for learning
£50 provides three months’ membership for a local club – so a young adult can socialise and develop skills
£100 helps fund a lightweight wheelchair – so a young person can enjoy independence.

Nur’s story

A Your Opportunity grant helped twenty-three-year-old Nur – in pain and unable to get out independently – who needed a new, lightweight wheelchair.

Born with a rare metabolic condition, Nur has the learning age of a child and severe, painful arthritis, which makes getting around difficult. She is a sociable, outgoing woman who wants to be as independent as possible.

Her old wheelchair was very heavy. When arthritis flared up in her wrists, she couldn’t turn the wheels and had to rely on others to move her around.

Independence boost

That’s when her mum applied through the Your Opportunity programme for a lightweight wheelchair. Within a few weeks it was delivered, and Nur immediately regained independence.

No longer relying on her mum, Nur now makes her own way to college where she’s enrolled on a life-skills course and is learning cooking, gardening, and numeracy and literacy.

Without the support of Your Opportunity, her family couldn’t have afforded her new wheelchair. It’s made a huge difference to Nur’s quality of life. And to her mum’s.
