Working out if you can apply
Grants are available for families who are raising a child or young person with a long-term disability, disabling condition or life-limiting illness on a low income.
If your child needs a high level of support in at least three of the areas below, you may be eligible to apply to us:
- Personal care
- Access to social activities
- Education
- Communication
- Supervision
- Medical treatment
- Physical environment
You are likely to be eligible for a grant if your family’s main carer receives one of the following:
- Universal Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income Related Employment Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Housing Benefit
- Pension Credit
Getting ready to apply
As part of the Family fund application you will need to provide evidence of both your income and the impact of disability or illness on your child.
You will need to provide a copy of your most recent benefit entitlement. This can be a letter or a screenshot, showing the name of your family’s main carer, and current address.
You can still apply if you don’t receive any benefits. We will need you to provide some extra information about your household income. We may not be able to award a grant if you have a significant level of household income or savings.

Consent
We will need your permission to collect and use your data according to privacy and protection rules.

About your situation
We will need to collect information about your household and living arrangements.
We also need to know which grant item(s) you would like to be considered for.
Create a password
In the next part of the application, we need to capture more detailed and sensitive data. To keep your information secure, we will need you to set a password. Please note – our application system was updated in September 2023, so any passwords you may have created before then, will no longer be valid and you will be prompted to create a new one.
Your password must be a minimum of 10 characters long and include at least one capital letter, one lower case letter, one number and one special character.
We will send you an email with your own unique Family Fund number – this will be required when logging in to your application.
Log in to finish the application
Each time you log in to your application, you will need:
- Your email address (the same you previously registered with)
- Your Family Fund number
- Your password
We will send you a verification code (to check it is you!). Enter this code to access your application.
Complete the application
Your application with a number of parts to complete and once you log in, you will be able to see your progress and access each section individually.
Each section will turn green once completed. You are able to save your progress and leave the application as your time allows. You simply need to log back in and continue with the sections in your own time. You have 28 days to complete an application.
Review your answers
Once you have completed all of the sections, you are advised to review your responses and make sure that you have answered in as much detail as possible. For example, if you tell us that your child needs regular support – that tells us there is a need. However if you tell us what that support is and what is it for – that tells us more about the nature of the need. All of this information allows Family Fund to make a decision on your application.
Once you click ‘next’ on this page, you will not be able to make any changes to any of your answers.
Your supporting documents
This section will tell you the type(s) of documents that we will need to see to support your applicaiton. These will be based on your answers in the application.
Documents will need to be uploaded one at a time. These documents must be in the following formats: PDF, JPEG, PNG or GIF and no larger than 15MB. We cannot accept DOC (Microsoft Word documents) and these will need to be converted to another format.
