British Sign Language Courses
Funding can be used for any British Sign Language (BSL) course accredited by Signature, and families are free to choose the provider that works best for them. There are lots of different options available, including local colleges, community organisations, deaf clubs, and independent BSL tutors, as long as the course leads to a recognised qualification.
One way to find an accredited course is through Signature, the recognised awarding body for BSL qualifications. Their website has a search function that allows you to find approved centres and courses in your area.
You may also find suitable courses by searching online for local colleges, adult education providers, or deaf organisations that offer BSL training. Many deaf clubs run or host accredited courses and can be a great place to learn in a supportive, community setting.
Another option is to contact a BSL teacher directly. The BSL Teacher Directory lists qualified tutors across the UK and includes their contact details, so you can ask whether they deliver accredited courses and what levels they offer.
If you are the parent or carer of a deaf child, your Teacher of the Deaf or local deaf children’s society may also be able to advise on accredited BSL courses available in your area and which options might best suit your family.
For more information about BSL and learning options, visit the National Deaf Children’s Society website here.
Alternatively, we are working with the Royal Association for Deaf people (RAD) who are a Deaf-led national charity and Signature accredited provider of BSL training. If you do not tell us in your application that you want to find your own course provider, then we can organise your course through RAD.
If you have already applied to us, and did not tell us that you want to find your own training provider for your BSL course, you will need to call Family Fund on 01904 550055 to discuss your award further.
