We’re delighted to announce Take a Break, Scotland’s short break scheme for carers of disabled children and young people re-opens for applications at 12:00pm on Tuesday 3 May.

Take a Break delivers one of four, short break grant programmes available in Scotland, funded by the Scottish Government and administered by us here at Family Fund, on their behalf.

Take a Break Scotland grants enable families caring for a disabled or seriously ill child or young person, to have the opportunity to choose how they would like to take a break.

It is a discretionary fund that aims to support carers to improve their physical and emotional wellbeing, and give opportunities to take part in fun and leisure activities or enjoy a break from caring.  All carers need time to help relax and unwind away from the everyday routine of caring.

Last year the Scottish Government provided £700,000 for Take a Break, but this year funding has increased to £1.5 million. This will allow Family Fund to administer Take a Break, Scotland grants to around 4,500 families.

Grant applications are open from Tuesday 3 May to 5:00pm on Monday 20 June 2022.

With steeply rising costs, sustained pressures and reduced access to support services, following the pandemic, families’ budgets and caring responsibilities are stretched even further. These breaks and respite can transform families’ lives.

I you have lived in Scotland for six months or longer, are a UK resident and are caring for a disables child or young person aged 0-20 years; you could be eligible for a Take a Break, Scotland short break grant.  Find out more about the Take a Break scheme by visiting our webpage: https://www.familyfund.org.uk/take-a-break
