Vicky Ford MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families, has written a ministerial letter to families and those supporting children and young people with SEND outlining the support available as they return to schools and educational settings in England on Monday 8 March.

The Minister thanks all parents and carers, as well as schools and colleges for their "tremendous efforts in supporting the education, health and wellbeing of our children and young people during this current national lockdown" and sets out information regarding support provided for children and young people with SEND.

Key points covered in the letter are: 

  • Guidance and information on testing children and young people with SEND and how to access Rapid lateral flow testing for households;
  • Face Coverings and exemptions for those children and young people with SEND;
  • NHS England specifies that community health services, including therapies that support children and young people with SEND, should continue to be prioritised;
  • Training for the education workforce on supporting children and young people with SEND with their mental health and wellbeing;
  • An education recovery plan with £302 million Recovery Premium for state primary and secondary schools;
  • A £79 million boost to children and young people’s mental health support
