Family Fund awarded government standard for cyber security protection Family Fund has been awarded Cyber Essential Plus accreditation – the higher level of the government-endorsed standard for cyber security best practice. The standard has been achieved by both Family Fund and our trading subsidiary, Family Fund Trading. It means that we have implemented security controls to mitigate the risk from common internet-based threats and that our systems have been independently tested to verify this. With over 85,000 applications received every year it is important to Family Fund to reduce our vulnerability to cyber security risks, and build on our existing data security practices. Family Fund Trading, which provides grant administration and fulfilment services to local authorities and charities across England and Wales, also wanted to demonstrate that their systems, used to fulfil tens of thousands of orders each year were fit for purpose, in order to provide security and peace of mind to their customers. The Cyber Essentials scheme defines a set of essential security controls that organisations need to have in place to reduce the risk posed by threats originating on the Internet. The Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation is more rigorous than the basic Cyber Essentials accreditation, as it requires vulnerability tests to be performed by independent auditors. Cyber Essentials is mandatory for all central government contracts that involve handling personal information and providing certain ICT products and services. Andrew Newton, Director of ICT at Family Fund, said “We take the security of our families’ data very seriously, and we were keen to demonstrate that we have taken precautions to guard against the most prevalent internet-based threats.” “This is why we went for the more rigorous Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation, so that our systems were independently tested by an external organisation.” “But this is just part of our ongoing work to ensure we can meet the challenges that cyber security presents in the 21st century. We will continue to identify opportunities to improve our systems and processes so that families applying to Family Fund can have confidence that their data is being used and stored as safely as possible.” Find out more about Cyber Essentials.
