We are very pleased to announce that Family Fund have been nominated by York Rotary Club as their charity of choice for the York Dragon Boat Race 2016.

Family Fund is one of two charities chosen to benefit from the Dragon Boat Race next year along with The Island, a York charity supporting vulnerable 8-13 years olds struggling to cope at home, at school or in the wider community.

The Dragon Boat Race has been held annually on the River Ouse since 2003, during that time York Rotary Club have raised over £800,000 for local charities. 36 teams battle it out for the coveted Challenge Trophy rowing from the Scarborough Railway Bridge to Lendal Bridge. Family Fund has competed in the event for the last 4 years ‘The Race is a great experience, team spirit on the day is immense.’ - Laura, Family Fund Team captain 2015.

The funds raised from the event next year will be used specifically to help siblings of disabled and seriously ill children in the York area in our Siblings Matter Too project. The Siblings Matter Too project has been in place for a few years but only on a very small scale. We want to do more to address and acknowledge the unique role siblings play, and give opportunities which they would not otherwise enjoy. Increasingly parents have told us about the reliance they have on siblings of their disabled child with many of them acting as carers.

Andy Simpson, Business Development Director at Family Fund said ‘We are so happy to get this opportunity from York Rotary Club, it will allow Family Fund to recognise siblings of disabled children who, through the pressures of caring for disabled children can be overlooked. This means that some siblings can be isolated from their peers, lack confidence as well as having problems in education, we hope to help address some of these issues.’

The Dragon Boat Race will take place on Sunday 10th July 2016.
