Meet Aminu, Family Fund’s number one fundraiser for the Vitality Big Half 2020. Aminu's son has Autism and ADHD. His family has been supported by Family Fund for the last eight years. 

“With Family Fund’s support, we’ve been able to access a tablet which helps with my son’s learning,” Aminu explained. “We have also been able to have our garden turfed, which supports his high sensory needs. He loves the feel of the grass now.”

In 2020, Aminu set his sights on fundraising for Family Fund. “Every little helps!”, “I kept thinking that there are other families in the same position as me. I wanted to help.

“I had been cycling and weight lifting at my new local gym. My strength improved and I started to enjoy training. I began to feel like a marathon might be possible. I had been considering fundraising for Family Fund, so I thought why not combine the two?

“I’ve always wanted to do a full marathon, but I thought that might be a bit much straight away! So I focused on the half marathon – the Big Vitality Half seemed like the perfect choice time-wise.

“I didn’t think I would raise that much in the beginning, but then the donations started coming in and it reached a point where I thought, no going back now! Lots of people put their trust in me – they depended on me to do it!

“When the day of the run finally came, I felt relaxed. I was kind of looking forward to it. I took my family to London with me and we made a day of it.

“The atmosphere was great at the event. It was lovely to see so many people running for a cause. It was good to feel part of these thousands of people running for good.

“For my next fundraising event, I’d love to do cycling. I’ve signed up for the London2Brighton cycle, although it has now been postponed. I’m keeping up my training in the meantime!”

Thinking about a challenge for Family Fund?

Aminu recommends picking a challenge that you enjoy. “It’s always going be a sport for me,” Aminu explained. “You’ve got to enjoy what you’re doing to motivate yourself enough to complete the challenge. If you don’t, it makes training daunting.

“I didn’t use to run and now I’ve done a half marathon! I had an issue with my leg that needed physio, so I had to train carefully. My biggest tip is to be patient, take it slow, and build it up.”

Aminu’s fundraising tips

When fundraising, Aminu's main tip is focusing on the workplace first. “My manager was kind enough to be the first person to donate and that made it easier to approach my colleagues for donations. I also asked my company to match my donation.

“I asked in all of my WhatsApp groups and posted the link to Facebook. I asked people to share it with their friends as well. Reposting is key.

“Most people I spoke to had not heard of Family Fund. Many also didn’t know about my son’s condition. I found that the more people learn, the more interested they become in helping. Taking time to share your story and your reason for fundraising helps.

“I would also say be patient. It takes time for donations to come in. Keep reminding people and have hope. It took over a week for my donations to start coming.

“Whenever I was struggling to motivate myself, I thought about all of the other families that are in the same position as me. Other low-income families are struggling to support their children with disabilities and I could do something to help.”

With his hard work and determination, Aminu raised an incredible £1,106. This is vital support that will help families raising disabled and seriously ill children and young people across the UK. We couldn’t be more grateful for Aminu’s support – we can’t wait to see what he does next!
