Raising thousands by ffundering down stream 10 July marked the annual York Dragon Boat Race, hosted by the York Rotary Club on the River Ouse. We were very proud to be nominated by York Rotary Club as one of two chosen charities along with The Island, a York charity supporting vulnerable 8-13 years olds struggling to cope at home, at school or in the wider community. Being a charity of the year made this our biggest year yet, with a larger presence on the day with stands and supporters on both sides of the river. The day was full of drum banging, paddle-waving and brilliant fancy dress with team spirit almost palpable in the air. While Family Fund’s team, Ffunderbolts, put in a tremendous effort unfortunately we didn’t make it to the final with a team from Fourth Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment winning the final race. Over £63,000 was raised on the day through all teams’ dedicated fundraising efforts, a portion of which will be used specifically to help siblings of disabled and seriously ill children and young people in the York area. Our aim is to increase awareness of the unique role siblings play, and give them opportunities which they would not otherwise enjoy. Increasingly parents have told us about the reliance they have on siblings of their disabled child with many of them playing an active caring role, this funding will allow us to support these young carers in York.
