Meet Chloe, our Information and Support Content Officer here at Family Fund. Chloe was all set to take on the Great North Swim last summer until Coronavirus caused the event to be cancelled. Did she let that stop her? Not a chance.

“I wanted to challenge and test myself whilst giving something back to the charity I love so much!" Chloe explained. "I see on a daily basis how the money raised helps and supports families with essential items and much needed breaks away."

In 2020, Chloe decided to combine fundraising for Family Fund with a personal challenge. "Swimming is my favourite sport and I’ve always loved to swim. After seeing the advertisement for the Great North Swim, I thought it was a great opportunity to complete a swimming challenge whilst raising money for a good cause.”

But at the same time as Chloe started her training at the beginning of 2020 the Coronavirus pandemic spread across the Nation, resulting in the cancellation of the mile long swim across Lake Windermere. “I was heartbroken when I heard the event was cancelled, I'd spent months working hard and preparing for the swim.” This set back didn’t stop Chloe, “I was determined not to let the hours of training and fundraising for our families go to waste."

The pandemic has been difficult for everyone, but I know the families we help have had it really tough.

Chloe decided to put her own twist on the original event. “Once the pools re-opened in October I focused on getting back into shape and completed a two mile open water pool swim.”

“I am currently still registered to complete the Great North Swim when Coronavirus restrictions allow the event to go ahead safely. When I do, I am determined to beat my outdoor pool swim personal best of 23 minutes and 45 seconds! Long term, I really want to swim the channel - but that maybe a little longer in the planning just yet!”

When fundraising, Chloe’s main tip was to focus on raising money online - “Push your JustGiving page on every form of social media that you have. When you share your story, try and highlight all the amazing work Family Fund does. It’s so important that the person donating to you understands where their money goes and who it will help.”
