Jack is 5 and comes from Northern Ireland, and has recently been on a break to Majorca with his family, thanks to a grant from Family Fund.  Jack’s mum, Maggie, found out about Family Fund through a friend on Facebook, who encouraged her to apply. When they were awarded the grant, Maggie and the family were excited by the opportunity to spend quality time together in a relaxing environment.

Jack has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, and as a result of this he can become easily frustrated, experiences meltdowns, and requires constant supervision.  Maggie applied for a holiday abroad as she felt this would be really beneficial to Jack. “Jack spends a lot of time at home, watching TV, playing video games, and playing with the iPad. I felt a break would be really good for him, to get some sunshine and some fresh air”. In Majorca, Jack had the opportunity to experience activities that he wouldn’t usually do at home.  “We did all sorts of things, we went to a water park, but Jack’s favourite part of the holiday was going on safari. He had a wonderful holiday.”

Not only did Jack have a great time, but the break also provided a relaxing break for the rest of the family. They all enjoyed taking some time away from the stresses of everyday life and the not-so-sunny Northern Irish weather. “We were away for two whole weeks” Maggie said. “It was lovely to be able to relax together as a family, and do things that we couldn’t do at home. Then there’s the weather! Where we are we don’t really get nice weather, so it was great to get some sunshine, and to get Jack outside away from his video games and television.”

Maggie told us that without the grant from Family Fund, it would be unlikely that Jack and the family would have been able to go on holiday. “Without the grant, we probably wouldn’t have gone anywhere. We’d have stayed at home and Jack would have played on his iPad, and he would have missed out on the experience.”

“Jack and the family had a wonderful time, and it would not have been possible without Family Fund.”
