Charlie, like many two year-olds, enjoys nursery rhymes, animals, toys and, according to his mum Christine, he also has a ‘scary ability’ to open mobile phones or tablets quicker than either of his parents can. Charlie has Down Syndrome and Christine applied to Family Fund after hearing about them on a Facebook page for parents who have children with Down Syndrome and other genetic disorders.

“Family Fund helped us with an iPad, something that would have been unaffordable without their help. Plus it was something essentially needed in order to carry on the work of the portage workers and speech and language therapists when they were not visiting.”

“The iPad has improved his motor and verbal skills,” says Christine. “Charlie loves making actions to animals when lions and elephants appear on his jungle app, and he will respond to the appearance of a cow on the screen in a farmyard app by saying “moo”. Charlie also loves using the firework app and apps by Fisher Price.”

“The iPad has also helped with his Makaton and therefore this has helped him to communicate as my son is non-verbal.”
